unit 74 story development. asignment 1

Overcoming the monster

Stranger things 1,2 and 3: a boy goes missing in 1983 called Will. They look for will and discover a new world called the upside down. Another girl is found who has been tortured for having psychokinetic powers and teleportation. The girl is taken in by Wills friend Mike. He feeds her and she eventually helps him find his friend Will. Will is taken as a host for the mind flyer which gives him issues such as a fever. There are sub plots which include romance but its mostly about fighting the mind flyer and Demogorgon’s.

Little red riding hood: the monster is the wolf who eats red riding hoods granny. The tale teaches children not to trust people they meet in woods. Little red must go to her grans to give her cookies or whatever. On the way she meets a wolf who talks to her and asks where she’s going. The wolf goes and gets there before her and eats her grandma then pretends to be her. She is saved by a forest person who chops down trees.
Stranger things I think fits better for the genre as the monsters are more explicit and a lot scarier than little red riding hoods wolf.  For children I guess the wolf could be considered scary because of the concept of ware wolves. Stranger things also battle the monsters more in comparison to little red riding hood.
Rebirth

The Bible: Jesus is said to have died for our sins then is resurrected from the dead-on Easter Sunday. There are many other stories, but the Easter story works better for rebirth. In a longer format Jesus is betrayed by Jesus and then he leaves to the garden. Then he eats with his friend the disciples and then he is crucified the next day. A few days later he is found alive.

A Christmas carol: the story is more about scrooge becoming a new person and showing the rich why they should change in the Victorian era. Scrooge is visited by 3 ghosts- past present and future. The spirit of Christmas past shows scrooge his past as a child and with his ex-belle who broke up with him because he was much richer than her. The ghost of Christmas present shows scrooge tiny Tim’s house. Tim is sick and scrooge asks if he will live spirit says no. scrooge shows a small change towards tiny Tim. The spirit of Christmas yet to come shows people talking bad about scrooge and shows him his own grave. Scrooge changes and buys tiny Tim a turkey.
The bible fits very well since Jesus comes back from the dead literally. A Christmas carol also fits well but on a more implicit level as he changes as a person which changes his life.

Quest

Scooby doo! -scooby doo is set around the idea of detectives who must solve mysteries and find out who the criminals are. Episode example- what the hex. The kids pay a visit to their friend Sharon Wetherby, whose Uncle Stuart has been cursed by the ghost of the family's neighbour, Elias Kingston. When Uncle Stuart disappears altogether, Mystery Inc. ventures into the abandoned and allegedly haunted Kingston Mansion next door, in search of him and the ghost.

Pretty little liars: There is a group of girls whose friend goes missing. She is presumed dead and buried alive, but the girls receive texts from an unknown number (blocked ID) which can be threatening towards the girls. They are on two separate quests here mostly throughout; they must find out what really happened to their missing friend and what who A is in each season it changes.
These both fit the genre of quest, but I’d say pretty little liars is more complex yet still very relevant as there’s normally more than one quest going on at the same time where as scooby do is just one quest in each episode.
Journey and return

A room with a view: a room with a view contains two journeys. A physical journey and a metaphorical journey. Lucy goes with her aunt to visit a pension in France. She meets a boy called George who has a room with a view and his dad. Her cousin charlotte has an argument with them because she doesn’t want debt by taking their room. Eventually Lucy gets the room with the view and George and Lucy fall in love. Lucy makes a journey to adulthood and matures. They return to England and charlotte wants her to marry Cecil who is gay. So that doesn’t work out and she goes back to George in the end and lives happily ever after.

E.T.: ET is about an alien who lands on earth. He ends up living with Eliot and his family. ET learns how to talk from listening to his sister Gertie. ET becomes home sick he dies for a short period of time then resurrects from the dead. This is a separate return as he comes back from the dead. He eventually goes back home in the end.
They are both relevant to the genre of journeys and return.
Rags to riches

Annie- Annie is about an orphan who is adopted by a wealthy man and woman, the woman is called Grace. Annie has been looking for her parents and is put on the radio. People come to the orphanage claiming to be Annie’s parents but aren’t. then grace comes along but miss Hanigan tries to keep her to herself. Annie is eventually adopted and enjoys life as a rich.

Glee- the series is about a show choir who wins competitions. They go through sectionals, regionals and then nationals. The female protagonist Rachel leaves McKinley to a drama school called nayada and eventually stars in funny girl which was her dream.
Annie seems to fit rags to riches more than glee since it is more dominant in the plot.

Tragedy

Romeo and Juliet: Romeo and Juliet is about two families who are always fighting each other. The Montagues consist of Romeo, Benvolio, lord Montague and lady Montague. The Capulets consist of Juliet, Lady Capulet, nurse, lord Capulet and Tybalt. Romeo gate crashes Juliet’s party and they meet by an aquarium. They instantly fall in love unaware of each other’s surname until the nurse points it out to Romeo. They marry each other secretly but Romeo flees the country and Juliet fakes a death to get him home. Romeo thinks she’s dead and kills himself. She wakes up and kills herself after seeing him dead.

The lion king: the lion king is arguably a tragedy since Simba’s father dies when he is young but then he grows to be king himself. The story itself is based of Shakespeare’s hamlet which is a tragedy. The story also fits quest in the sense that in order to be king Simba has to defeat people who don’t want him to be king such as his uncle who is his fathers brother.

Romeo and Juliet seems to fit the genre more than the lion king since its more for a older audience, you wouldn’t expect an 8 year old really to understand Shakespeare.
Comedy

Ja’mie the private school girl: the show is about an Australian grammar school which is around a girl named ja’mie who’s a prefect. She is spoiled and can be mean but its all scripted to be a laugh. The series follows up from summer heights and we can be heroes. Each episode explores a different topic like PE or skirts being too short.

Gavin and Stacy: The show follows the romance between Gavin, from Billericay in Essex, and Stacey, from Barry in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. Initially, Gavin lives with his parents, Pam and Mick, and spends most of his time with his best friend, Smithy. Stacey lives with her widowed mother, Gwen, and is frequently visited by her uncle, Bryn, who lives across the road, and by her best friend Nessa. The series follows the key moments in their relationship: their first meeting, meeting each other's families, getting engaged, marrying, looking for a flat, briefly splitting up, looking for new jobs and trying for children. The characters of Gavin and Stacey provide the emotional core of the story. The show focuses on the situations that arise when their relationship brings their two differing families together. As a result, episodes often focus on the key events in life that bring wider families and close friends together such as weddings, christenings, birthday parties and Christmases. However, the show also presents the families interacting in deliberately non-dramatic situations, such as a visit to the beach and nights out. A significant second storyline follows the contrasting relationship between Smithy and Nessa. Despite their dislike for each other, they have several one-night stands, leading to Nessa becoming pregnant and having their baby. Whilst Gavin and Stacey are the clear main characters, towards the end of the show's run, the dramatic emphasis switches slightly from them, as they resolve their distance issues, to Smithy and Nessa, as Nessa becomes engaged to another man. Other storylines that run throughout the course of the three series include Pam's fake vegetarianism, Bryn and his nephew Jason's struggle to keep the events of their disastrous fishing trip a secret (with the outcome never actually being revealed), and the ridiculously rocky marriage of Pam's friends Pete and Dawn.
Gavin and Stacy seems to be more comedic in the sense that it tackles more adult topics in a humorous  way.

12 steps
Your story choice: frozen

The ordinary world.
The ordinary world is Arendelle, the world is normally dry and happy but gets cold in the winter. The world is filled with people that seem to be friendly and helpful. Even the animals talk. It starts normal with Anna and Elsa who are sisters living with their parents. This fits here as nothing really happens it all must be normal looking. Elsa is locked away with her sister Anna.
The Call to Adventure.
the adventure is Anna going out to find Elsa in an ice castle. This fits here as she must find her sister with Kristof and his companion Sven. They go through snow and find Olaf who then helps them to find Elsa. This couldn’t fit anywhere else as it is too action based.  She meets Kristof at a shop, and he agrees to help her.
Refusal.
There is no refusal.
Mentor Helper.
There are two helpers, Sven and Olaf. Sven is a reindeer and Olaf is a snowman. They both go on an adventure together and help Anna and Kristof. They fit here as Olaf leads them to Elsa, but Sven is there from the start.
Crossing the Threshold.
Not really one they just go.
Test/Allies/Enemies.
Annas horse returns home without her and Hans goes to the duke who sends his men out to kill Elsa seeing her as a threat. This is a test for them because they must get there before them unknowing that they are out there looking for them.
Approach.
There isn’t really an approach.
Ordeal.
Anna, Kristof and Olaf meet a snow monster on near the castle they must fight this before being able to get to Elsa. Then Anna goes to Elsa and she puts a spell on her accidentally freezing her heart. Kristof goes to his adoptive family of ogres/ stones and they say Anna can only be unfrozen from the kiss of a true love. Anna is taken home to Arendelle then taken to Hans. Hans admits he’s been trying to seize the throne and locks anna away. Elsa is ordered to be killed but she escapes her cell. Olaf saves anna and they adventure into a blizzard to meet Kristof who is in love with anna. Meanwhile Elsa is about to be killed she breaks down stopping the storm. Anna sees then jumps in the way. Elsa mourns over her sister.  This must fits here because it’s the main action and it couldn’t fit anywhere else.
Reward.
Realizing that love is the key to controlling her magic, Elsa ends the winter and gives Olaf his own snow flurry to survive the warmer climate. Hans is arrested and exiled from the kingdom for his attempted assassination, while the Duke's trade links with Arendelle are cut off. This fits here as it means everyone can live better in harmony.
Atonement.
Anna gives Kristoff a new sleigh and the two kiss.  The sisters are reunited, and Elsa promises never to lock the castle gates again. This is a happy ending since the sisters are reunited
Return.
Included in other parts.

 Character roles
Protagonist
Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn- she was a psychiatrist who fell in love with her patient the Joker. She left her job to help the joker do tricks and stuff. She is now more of an agent who solves problems. She fits this role and the narrator role because birds of prey is about how she responds to a breakup and finds a missing diamond then kills the villain.. They have clearly made her this way so she fits the DC world but also to make the movie more about her as there is other plots in the movie like the missing diamond.
Antagonist
Alex Duval- he fits this role because he really doesn’t like the junior doctor on his role because he makes “too many mistakes” even though he is just saving lives and people only like the junior doctor because of his legendary dead mother. (Holby)They have probably chosen to do this as they want sympathy for the junior doctor and to show the struggles they might face on the way to be an actual doctor. They’ve made her like this to solve most the problems they face throughout harry potter.
Deuteragonist
Hermione Granger- she works alongside Harry to defeat beasts before they kill them. She also helps them achieve the best grade possible as a Raven-claw type character who was put in the wrong house. She helps them get the philosophers stone.
Love interest
Oliver valentine- Oliver clearly fits this role as Zosia March falls in love with him after working with him for a while. Their love is a bit of an on off until a certain point. Ollie supports Zosia’s decisions such as going to Yale. Even though Ollie gets shot Zosia stays with him afterwards. I personally feel they have put Ollie as a love interest to show that even though Zosia may have her own personal struggles she is still lovable which she is and reminds the audience no matter what their struggles are they should still be able to find someone who can support them.
Mentor
Ethan Hardy- In casualty Ethan is often used as a mentor such as for mason. Mason and Ethan don’t actually get along but Ethan stayed with him as a mentor until his sudden death. Mason died in from an underlying heart condition that wasn’t known of.. Ethan is shown to be a good mentor as he has been in the show for a few years and is very experienced. He is a friendly but also quite dorky character who gets along with most people except Rash.
Narrator
Meredith Grey- Meredith is also one of the protagonists but also narrates the show with her thoughts here and there. It is done so in a way that the tension isn’t taken away so it might start with Meredith talking then end with her talking but when the action is happening you cant really tell what she is thinking other than I have to save this patient.
Tertiary character
A tertiary character is a character whose purpose and significance is little, even if they appear in more than one episode. These characters can be stock characters or joke characters, if they are granted higher importance than that, they can be bumped to a secondary character.
Karen Smith-she is one of the plastics in Mean Girls. She’s the dumbest one who makes everyone laugh. She asks dumb questions and although appears quite a lot I would say she fits this category as she’s funny. She appears quite a lot and is probably one of the most iconic characters.
Flat character
Literally any side patient in casualty who doesn’t get much attention to the plot. E.g. A few weeks ago, a patient came in after an OD, they didn’t get much mention because other story-lines were going on. This fits the flat character category as they were literally only in it for a moment and we never really got to find out what happened to them which is unusual for casualty.

genre
Stranger Things periodic drama, Sci-Fi and horror
Stranger things is set back in the 80s. It fits sci-fi as there is the upside-down room thing which they go into in attempt to demolish the world. It fits horror since they must fight Demogorgon’s to survive and there is also the mind flyer.  Pretty much on going but takes breaks.

Birds of prey Action adventure and crime
Birds of prey is action as Harley and the birds must fight black masks (roman) army to get the diamond. It fits crime as there is the death of black mask after Harley throws him into a river, theft and a mention of a massacre. It fits adventure as Harley goes to a prison to find Cassandra Cain.

Holby City medical drama with subplots of romance.
Holby fits medical drama as it is set in a hospital which has 3 wards, Keller, AAU and Darwin. The show has lots of sub romance as doctors and nurses fall for each other. Holby is always on going which means that they will always renew after a series.

Casualty Medical Drama  with subplots of romance.
Set in the ED and resus. It shows the accidents and the treatment of characters. The romance is mostly doctors falling in love with each other but there can be patients and doctors together sometimes. Other romance is like hospital guests and doctors. Paramedics fall in love with each other too. Casualty is also on going.
Call the midwife period drama, period drama, family drama
Call the midwife fits drama since it is dramatic, each episode has two or more storylines. Period drama as it shows you how midwifery improves through time with medicine. It is said to be a family drama I’d guess because it constantly shows families but also because its suitable for most ages 12+. Pretty much on going but takes breaks.

Myth
Something you are told as a child like a short story or a sentence.
Googles definition- Myth is a folklore genre consisting of narratives or stories that play a fundamental role in a society, such as foundational tales or origin myths. The main characters in myths are usually gods, demigods or supernatural humans.
Myth example-
Bad luck to put new shoes on the table. Bad luck to walk on the wrong side of the lamp post.
Persephone controls the seasons. She is in the underworld in winter and in the spring, she returns to her mother and father.  This teaches a different perspective of the seasons. This counts as a myth as wed all know there isn’t really an underworld, but the story is nice to think about as a different perspective of the changing seasons.

Fable
A short story with a short story, typically with animals as characters, conveying a moral. They are educational.
Googles definition - the fable of the sick lion and the wary fox rale. Normally includes some animals.
Fable example- stick man lives in a family tree with his stick lady love and his 3 children. He goes for a walk but gets lost. He encounters dangers like a dog, bird, river then humans. He eventually comes back in time for Christmas. This teaches children that its good to get out of their comfort zone and go on adventures, but it also shows how dangerous it can be to live in a world on your own. This counts as a fable as it includes a message and it includes animals. Although the story is new it still counts. Stick man also teaches the amount of uses for a stick e.g. Dog toy or bat.

Legends
A legend is a story you tend to remember well.
Googles definition- a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but not authenticated.
"the legend of King Arthur"
Legend example
Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (Arabic: علي بابا والأربعون لصا‎) is a folk tale included in many versions of One Thousand and One Nights. Antoine Galland, who heard the story from Syrian Maronite storyteller Hanna Diyab, added it to the Nights in the 18th century. It is one of the most familiar of the "Arabian Nights" tales and has been widely retold and performed in many media, especially for children, where the more violent aspects of the story are often suppressed. Ali baba is a legend as it is well known and links to wider folklore tales told by Scheherazade.

Folklore
An ancient story.
A folktale is an old story that's been told again and again, often for generations.
Folklore example
Cinderella. Cinderella counts as a folklore as it has been told for years and has been around for a long time. Cinderella also has different versions to fit different audiences such as live action, original Disney and another Cinderella story. I think this story fits as folklore as there are multiple versions of Cinderella altered to fit different cultures like ancient Greeks and Asia. The Grimm brothers took their own take on it in 1812. The story was originally written by Daisy Fisher.  The first film of Cinderella was made in 1899. The first Cinderella was Greek but Cinderella herself is French. The story is at least 2000 years old. a Greek courtesan named Rhodopis has one of her shoes stolen by an eagle, who flies it all the way across the Mediterranean and drops it in the lap of an Egyptian king. Taking the shoe drop as a sign from the heavens (literally and metaphorically), the king goes on a quest to find the owner of the shoe. When he finds Rhodopis, he marries her, lifting her from her lowly status to the throne.
